Child affected by petroleum pollution in Bentiu

"Born into a Toxic Legacy"

A Child Born Badly: The Hidden Health Crisis of Poor Petroleum Mining in Bentiu

Kuach Maale Payam, Guit County — In the small village of Kuach Maale, a baby boy was born in early 2026 with severe congenital abnormalities that doctors say are consistent with exposure to toxic environmental contaminants. His mother, Nyenhial Gatluak Dhuor, and father, Both Riek Bol, had lived their entire lives within sight of the nearby oil field, surrounded by unprotected waste pits, contaminated water sources, and air thick with the fumes of gas flaring.

"I drank the water that was available. I breathed the air that was there. I did not know it could harm my unborn child," Nyenhial told GSM‑CDA field staff. Her son died just a few weeks after birth — one of a growing number of children in Guit and across Unity State born with birth defects, respiratory illnesses, skin conditions, and developmental delays that community members and health workers attribute to decades of poorly regulated petroleum extraction.

GSM‑CDA's investigation has documented at least 47 cases of children under five in the Bentiu and Guit area presenting with unusual health conditions over the past two years. The Agency is calling for urgent action: independent assessments, clean water, medical care, stricter regulations, and comprehensive support for affected families.
